What is a Red Team?

In cybersecurity, different “Teams” handle various aspects of security. The most common teams are The Blue and Red Teams.

A Red team is responsible for Offensive security measures. Its primary role is to simulate real-world cyber attacks on an organization’s systems, networks, and applications to identify vulnerabilities and test the effectiveness of the existing defenses. The goal is to think and act like an adversary to find and exploit weaknesses before actual attackers can do so.

What is a Blue Team?

A Blue Team is defensive. Its primary role is to protect an organization’s systems, networks, and data from cyber threats. Duties include:

  • Responding to incidents.

Purple Team is both offensive and defensive. It integrates Red Teams (offensive) and Blue Teams (defensive) functions to enhance an organization’s cybersecurity posture. The Purple Team facilitates collaboration, ensuring that the insights and techniques from offensive activities (like penetration testing and threat simulations) are used effectively to improve defensive strategies (such as monitoring, incident response, and vulnerability management).
